Community Advocate Wesley Lawrence elected as President of the El Paso Young Democrats

El Paso —In response to Community Advocate and Former City Council Candidate Wesley Lawrence being elected as President of our org, El Paso Young Democrats (EPYD) offered the following:

" As a battle tested community advocate and former District 4 City Council Candidate I'm ready to turn this organization into a strong voice for our community and our Democracy. I look forward to fighting, protesting, and advocating with you!"

- President Wesley Lawrence

Today I firmly stand in unity with the youth in our community. As the incoming President of the El Paso Young Democrats I look forward to meeting with you to speak about how together we can build a better El Paso and a better Democratic Party! Equality, Equity, Compassion, and Progressive Policies are a must and we must keep up the fight in order to demand much needed change

When I first ran for office in 2020, I was honored to be an inaugural member of the El Paso Young Democrats. I remember all of the amazing leaders who helped rebuild this community, I remember their want for real and bold Progressive Change, but most importantly I remember their determination to fight for it! While leadership changed, the mission of the El Paso Young Democrats has remained strong and vigilant.

This is still the same determination and commitment that I saw when Jess Ramos and I organized a vigil for the victims of gun violence, a rally to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, and the vigil for the people of the Ukraine. It was the same vigilance that I saw when as Vice President we put on one of the biggest youth run candidates night and candidates forum in El Paso, where many candidates were energized to support and learn from us. As the incoming President my number one goal will be to keep the spirt alive and well while focusing on recruiting new progressive members who hunger to build a more Progresive El Paso!

Here is my list of actions I plan to lead as President of the El Paso Young Democrats:

  1. Work with the El Paso County Commissioners and Disability Rights advocates to create a County Accessibility Commission.

  2. Register, Engage, and Activate Young Voters in El Paso County to help flip Texas on November 8th, 2022.

  3. Collaborate and Support Progresive Organizations such as Justicia Fronteriza, Sunrise El Paso, and Ground Game Texas in order to ensure that their ballot measures head to the voters in November.

  4. Support, Engage, and Listen to Young Voters in our community by hosting town halls throughout El Paso focusing on change and important issues such as voting rights, defending the LGBTQIA2+ community, and local politics.

  5. Work with the local Democratic Party to recruit young and energized precinct chairs throughout El Paso County!

Wesley Lawrence is a lifelong El Pasoan, Progressive Democrat, environmentalist, former District 4 City Council Candidate and Northeast resident. He currently serves as the Democratic Chair for Precinct 195, Vice President of the Northeast Democrats, President of the El Paso Young Democrats, Senior Vice President for VFW Post 8550 Auxiliary, At-Large Board Member of the Borderland Rainbow Center, and is an Eagle Scout and a mentor to many in our community.

The El Paso Young Democrats are the official chapter of the Texas Young Democrats — one of the largest partisan youth organizations in the nation — in the Borderland. As the official voice of young Democrats in El Paso County, the organization strives to empower young El Pasoans through community activism and policy involvement locally, statewide, and nationally.
